Q and A

Question

I took the morning dose of Paxlovid in the evening.

I accidentally took the morning dose of Paxlovid in the evening. Is that a problem?

Answer

Hi, how are you doing?

Did you not take the morning dose? and instead you only had Paxlovid in the evening?

As with most medication, this is likely to be fine. Continue taking your medication when you were originally meant to.

If you notice any side effects/unexpected symptoms please speak to a pharmacist/doctor.

Hi Josh, I didn’t get my Paxlovid until almost 7 that evening so I took the evening dose should I have waited and started the next day?

Hi Debbie, changes in sense of taste is a common side effect of Paxlovid.

It is poorly understood why this happens but it is known that it is not harmful and after stopping treatment the taste will go away.

Does paxlovid leave a metal taste in your mouth?

Hi Marie, nothing will happen. The morning and evening doses are the same. They are only labelled as morning and evening to help you remember when to take them.

Hi Alissa, no you do not need to be concerned. Are you able to start taking them correctly now e.g., 2 niramatrelvir and 1 ritonavir each morning and evening until your course is complete?

You have had one single dose and spread it over the day. You can now continue with full doses morning and evening. Paxlovid will still work and you will be able to complete the course.

I misunderstood the directions for paxlovid. Instead of taking a whole blister pack, I took 2 of the Nirmatrelvir tablets in the morning and 1 of the ritonavir tablets at night, should I be concerned about anything?

Hi Judy, I am sorry to hear that your mouth is feeling sore. Unfortunately to make sure Paxlovid works as well as it can it is important you finish the course. How long does this awful taste last for? and has this sore mouth only been since starting Paxlovid?

What have you tried to help with the soreness/awful taste?
