Q and A

Question

If I am not on ART will my baby have HIV?

Can an HIV positive mother who is not on ARVs give birth to a HIV negative baby?

Answer

Hi, how are you doing?

Not being on ART means that there is a much higher chance that your baby will be born HIV positive.

Is there a reason you are not taking ART? ART is safe for both you and baby and is the best way to keep you both healthy.

Do you know your current CD4 count and viral load?

Many women all over the world are taking ART, even starting late in their pregnancy. They all go on to have healthy, HIV negative babies.

Baby will be given their own course of ART to help reduce the risk of transmission. But the risk is lowest if you start ART also. This is explained here.

Hi Friend, what time of the day is she vomiting? ARVs should not be causing her to vomit so quickly – if at all. How long after taking the tablet does she vomit?
