Question

My wife is HIV positive…

My wife is HIV positive and I’m negative, I got to know when she was pregnant and has now conceived. I sometimes have unprotected sex and she is pregnant again. What is the probability of me getting or becoming HIV positive. Thank you.

Answer

Hi, how are you and your wife doing?

Is your wife on medication? and if so do you know if her viral load is below 200? If so, there is no risk of transmission. This includes having sex without a condom. This is explained by U=U.

There are a number of other factors that change the risk of HIV transmission. These are discussed here.

Having sex with someone who is HIV positive does not guarantee transmission. Each exposure is unique and risk is changed accordingly. Have you considered using PrEP if there is a risk of transmission. This is a tablet you can take that will prevent any risk. You can take it daily or only when you are expecting to have sex.

Josh.
