Q and A

Question

Can HIV be transmitted if my viral load is 250?

Does having a viral load of 250 mean it can be transmitted to another person?

Answer

Hi, how are you doing?

A viral load of 250 is great. A viral load this low means that it is being suppressed.

For U=U to apply your viral load would need to be below 200.

Even though your viral load is a little higher than 200, the risk of transmission is very small. Unfortunately you cannot rely on U=U but transmission would be rare with a viral load of 250.

Hi Bb, for U=U to apply viral load is only considered undetectable when below 200.

Some sites say even Below 500 can be reffered as undetectable

Great thank you for that clarification. My viral load is now undetectable. I do have another question i have a 7 week baby i am not breastfeeding, why was i given co-trimoxazole. His pcr after birth was negative i am yet to do another one at 10 weeks. He was on nevaripine for 6 weeks n i was told to discontinue using it n start cotrimoxazole. I notice anytime i give my son the meds he gets a rash so i am scared he might be allergic to it. Is it there a possibility that cotrimoxazole might cause him to be resistant to certain antibiotics?
