My son has been without his meds for a few weeks…

My son is HIV positive. He ran out of his meds but still has another week and a half to go for his doctors appointment. He hasn’t taken any and little over a week already. His doctor is aware of this. Will he be OK?
Answer
Hi, how are both you and your son doing?
Yes, your son will be okay.
What medication does your son normally use? and do you know what his last viral load was?
As his doctor is aware has he been offered any treatment in the meantime e.g., a different type of ARV?
Being without his medication for a few weeks is unlikely to cause any significant problems. There is some risk that his viral load will increase again. This will need testing a few weeks after restarting treatment.
Josh.
