Q and A

Question

Can I switch from Aluiva and TDF to Luvigen?

I’m HIV positive and i’m using Aluvia and Tenofovir disoproxil fumarate. Can I change this medication to luvigen?

Answer

Hi, how are you doing?

Is there a reason you are asking to switch?

This is a common switch. This is because Aluvia is a ‘boosted’ drug meaning it is a combination of 2 drugs where one makes the other more effective. The problem being this can cause more side effects.

Please see this previous question.

Luvigen is a dolutegravir based regimen. People are recommended to take this drug in the morning because it can cause problems sleeping.

Is your current viral load suppressed? If you are and you have no known drug resistances this is a safe switch fo you to make.

As luvigen is often a better tolerated drug with fewer side effects, switching away from Aluvia if you have the option would be supported.

Josh.

Hi Sophie, it is difficult to comment without knowing your CD4 results. Sometimes te CD4 count can go up or down a little without meaning you immune system has changed at all.

Great that your are being so careful taking your meds – which is also why perhaps the CD4 difference is not important. It is much more imporatnat that your viral load is still undetectable.

Luvigen is a more modern combination that should be much better than Aluvia which is an older protease inhibitor.
