Question
How can I have sex and protect my baby’s health?
6 December 2023. Related: All topics, Children, HIV reinfection (superinfection), HIV transmission.
I’m a HIV positive breastfeeding mom. I recently had unprotected sex with someone who is HIV positive but has never taken any treatment. My viral load is undetectable and I’m taking my ART accordingly, how can having sex with an HIV positive person not on treatment affect both mine and my baby’s health?
Answer
Hi, how are you doing?
Congratulations on having a baby.
It is great to hear that you are doing well on treatment and have an undetectable viral load.
As you are on treatment, this is the best way to prevent any risk from having unprotected sex with your. parter.
Because your partner is not on treatment, your own ART will prevent any risk of transmission. This keeps both you are your baby healthy.
If your partner has used treatment before or only takes it sometimes, there would be some risk of transmission of HIV resistance. To prevent this using a condom would be recommended to prevent this.
