Question

Will a probiotic interfere with treatment?

Hi, may I know if probiotic will interfere with my ARV medicine (tenofovir and efavirenz)? Thank you

Answer

Hi, how are you doing?

No. A probiotic will not interfere with your treatment.

It is safe to take them together.

Hi Angela, do you have a regular partner? and do you know their status (and viral load)?

While you are using TLD (and eventually Truvada) it is advised to test every 3 months to continue to be aware of your status.

Have you noticed any problems while using TLD as PrEP?

    Hello Josh
    I am in West Africa
I have taken TLD for almost two months
Due to the unavailability of Truvada
I have been using TLD for substitute
    I’m taking one tablet daily

Hi Angela, where do you live?

TLD isn’t licensed for PrEP. This means even though it can work, it isn’t guaranteed to work as well as a 2-drug combination such as Truvada.

Some treatment will always be better than none. Are you planning on daily PrEP or on-demand?

Hi Simon, no this does not mean you have HIV. While on PEP any sign of HIV will be delayed until you stop PEP. Being on PEP does not prevent other common infections like the cold or the flu. It is still normal to become ill while on PEP.

PEP will delay when you can test. If you use a 4th generation antigen/antibody test you can test from 6 weeks after the last dose of PEP. If you only have access to a 3rd generation antibody test, the result will be convulsive from 12 weeks after PEP. Both of these cases will give a conclusive result and no further testing would be needed.

For more information about testing and transmission please see here: https://i-base.info/qa/factsheets/hiv-transmission-and-testing

I have been on PEP from r 22 days now. But suddenly had a sever fever this morning and constantly dried mouth/throat. Then a prickling feeling on my skin.Have I caught the virus? When can I get tested?
