Question
Can I restart meds after a break?
4 April 2024. Related: Access to treatment, Adherence, All topics, Starting treatment.
I’ve been HIV positive since 2009 and started taking treatment in September 2010 until I stopped last year in June. I’ve been fine since then… I was taking a break cos I was tired of taking the tablet… But now I want to start again… is it safe for me to do so?
Answer
Hi there
Please talk to your doctor and clinic about this.
Your doctor will help you to restart and to include support.
The meds used now might already be different to the last time you took ART. This means that the meds might be easier to take.
It will also be important to have a new CD4 count and viral load test as this will show you the impact of the time off treatment.
Usually this includes a drop in your CD4 count, so you have been lucky to have not become ill over the last year.
