Q and A

Question

Is HIV a risk after non-consensual sex?

My boyfriend forced himself on me a month ago. And I found out today that he is positive, is it possible for me to have gotten HIV?

Answer

Hi there

Sex needs to involve the active consent of whoever is involved.

If you did not want your boyfirned to have sex with you then you were assaulted.

If this included sex without condoms, there is always a risk of STIs including HIV, unless the HIV positive partner is on effective treatment.

Please speak to you clinic or doctor about testing for STIs and if there is support available over the assault.

Hi Tryo, as your viral load is below 200 there is no risk of transmission. Even without a condom it is impossible for you to pass on HIV to someone via sex.

Your viral load is so low that there is no risk. This is explained by U=U. It means that when you have a viral load below 200, the HIV in your body is so low that you cannot pass it on so it is safe to have sex with someone without risking transmission.
