Q and A

Question

Will PEP interact with my PID treatment?

I slept with HIV person from mid night up to morning 4 rounds without protection. I realized on 38 hours then when to the nearest health they gave me PEP but I had PID too, I was on my last does of gentamicin and ceftriaxone. On the first day I took PEP I also took two ampicillin after 5 hrs. Now I’m still feeling lower abdominal pain, sore throat, flue stomach pain even my pimples are now big. Will the PEP still work for me?

Answer

Hi, how are you doing?

Hopefully you will start to be feeling better soon.

What is the name of the PEP you are taking? Most commonly it is TLD. If you are using TLD there are some interactions between the medications you have listed.

TLD contains tenofovir, lamivudine and dolutegravir.

Tenofovir and gentamicin: both of these medications are removed from the body. When using them together there is some risk of kidney damage. Has this been discussed with your doctor? As you have had your last dose of gentamicin, there is little to no risk of interaction and having one days overlap is not going to risk any long-term problems.

Are you taking ampicillin orally? If this is the case there is no further risk with the following two drugs: lamivudine and tenofovir. If you are being given ampicillin through a cannula please speak with your doctor about possible interactions.

These interactions do not risk PEP not working and it will still be effective at preventing HIV transmission.

Josh.
