Question
Should I give my daughter another dose of zidovudine?
26 April 2024. Related: Adherence, All topics, Children.
My daughter vomited zidovudine about 5mins after administering should I give her another dose or wait for the next one? She is 2 weeks.
Answer
Hi, how are you doing?
Congratulations on having a baby.
Yes you can give your daughter another dose of zidovudine.
5 minutes is not long enough for any of this medication to have been absorbed. You will not risk giving baby too much zidovudine by giving her this additional dose.
As she has vomited, when giving her the next dose it would be advised to support her head and sit her up and hold her there for at least 30 minutes to ensure her stomach is settled.

Hello Nkosithandile and thanks for getting in touch.
Please speak to your doctor and midwife to get accurate information about this.
As a general guide: if your child vomits within the first 30 minutes after you give the medication, you can give the same dose again.
If it’s more than 30 minutes the medication will be absorbed.
Does your baby vomit anything else or is it just the medication that come out?
You can also try holding your baby in a different position that will help them keep down the medication.
To be sure, you always should let your doctor know, as babies are very sensitive and they should be managed closely by healthcare professionals.

Hey natash, my baby also vomit soon after giving her nevirapine and zidovudine. MMy VL was LTD before giving birth. I’m so worried I spoke to my doctor she told me to mix medication with my breastfeeding milk and the situation became worse I’m so worried
Dear Tshedza, please don’t worry. Sometimes it is difficult to get everything right and this small difference is not going to be a problem. It is already done now and just use the right dose going forward. Please also explain this to your doctor or pharmacist can they know and can adjust the prescription so you don’t run out of the meds. Congratulations on your new baby – they will still be okay :)
Hi ,
Immediately after birth my daughter was taken for blood test , I am HIV positive with undetectable viral load and her results came back NEGATIVE however I was given Zidovudine prior to results now I realised iv been miscalculating the dose for a week now I gave her 2ml instead of 1/5ml. I feel so bad , will it affect my baby ? What should I do now ?
Hi Natasha, congratulations on having a baby. Your baby not having Zidovudine will not risk anything.
As you have a low viral load, nevirapine alone is enough to reduce the risk of transmission to as low as possible. You do not need to worry about the zidovudine.
With a viral load as low as yours, the recommendation for baby to be on HIV treatment is 4-6 weeks which you have already completed with both drugs.
You have done everything right. You do not need to be concerned.
