Q and A

Question

I have a burning pain when I urinate, do I have HIV?

I am 39 years old. Just 15 days ago I had unprotected sex with a female partner.
Immediately after the act I suffered pains around my waist dropping down to my legs. My legs were completely paralysed for some 20 to 30 minutes. I couldn’t get up from the bed. It was a very strong pain like if I took a weakening injection needle.

The next day I started getting burning pains in and around my penis, which I still feel, till today. It burns like a hot pepper been poured on my penis and a flash of pain come and go inside my penis. Also I started urinating in every few minutes constantly without stopping. I also start feeling a serious waist pain and its like something going around my back and waist, so I decide to take the woman to a clinic for HIV test and she came out positive and I tested negative. I was ask to come back in 2 to 3 months time for another test but am very scared now; please its possible that I am affected with HIV now?

Answer

Thank you for your question.

It is impossible to say whether or not you have been infected with HIV. Only a test can tell you that.

The burning pains and increased urinating symptoms you describe are not related to a new HIV infection but could be caused by another sexually transmitted infection. You should go to your doctor for a full STI test as soon as possible.

The symptoms of paralysis should be mentioned to your doctor also as they cannot be explained by a STI and need to be checked out.

We are not doctors and so if you have symptoms you need to see a doctor, especially if you’re in pain.

Unfortunately we don’t have the resources to answer more questions about transmission and testing. This information service is about HIV treatment for people who are HIV positive.

Most questions about transmission and testing have been answered here:
