Q and A

Question

Can I get HIV from oral sex?

I’m a male, 30 years old. Yesterday, I had unprotected oral sex with a female who I don’t know her HIV status. I only had oral sex with her. She gave me a blowjob.

I am afraid that if she has HIV, I will be at risk of HIV infection. I’m so worried. Do I need to get HIV test?

Thank you very much!

Answer

Thank you for your question.

You cannot get HIV from oral sex this way. Anyone who is receiving a blowjob is not at risk. You also cannot get HIV from giving a woman oral sex.

Although up to 5% of HIV infections might be giving someone a blowjob, this probably depends on two factors. One is that viral load need to be very high in the positive partner and the second it that the negative partner probably need to have mouth problems, for example if they have bleeding gums, a cut in their mouth or recent dental work.

More information about HIV sexual transmission is included in this guide, which has a section on oral sex.

I also received oral sex recently from someone with HIV and was very worried, but have been reassured you can’t catch HIV this way.

You cannot get HIV this way. Only 5% of infections are from oral sex and then only people who are giving the blowjob are at risk. Anyone who is receiving a blowjob is not at risk. THere is no risk of transmission from sex when using a condom.

She gave me oral sex and i used a latex condom when i had sex with her. Later i found that she’s HIV positive. Am i now HIV positive?

An HIV positive person does not become very much more infectious from having other infections. In the context of oral sex this is a tiny factor and in real terms it is likely to drive further panic rather than a realistic risk assessment based on real-life situations.

The link to the US CDC public health site has a lot of good information, but is written for a specific purpose. This includes producing information on the potential for a risk that could not later be proven to be wrong.

The information we produce on oral sex is a real world guide based on the same evidence used by the CDC. The questions we get about the risk of oral sex are generally from worried people whose risk of HIV is likely in reality to be zero, but the CDC would cautiously call very low. Many people have barely had sex let alone risked HIV.

It is always good to read information from different sources in deciding what is right for you.

    Hi,

If the person performing the oral has some other virus or infection then does it not essentially make them more infectious and easier for them to transmit?

I understand what you are saying about transmission, but what about this website:
    http://www.cdc.gov/hiv/resources/qa/transmission.htm

i-Base no longer answers transmission questions as the information is already online.

See this guide to HIV transmission and the section on oral sex.
