Q and A

Question

Can I get HIV from oral sex?

I’m a male, 30 years old. Yesterday, I had unprotected oral sex with a female who I don’t know her HIV status. I only had oral sex with her. She gave me a blowjob.

I am afraid that if she has HIV, I will be at risk of HIV infection. I’m so worried. Do I need to get HIV test?

Thank you very much!

Answer

Thank you for your question.

You cannot get HIV from oral sex this way. Anyone who is receiving a blowjob is not at risk. You also cannot get HIV from giving a woman oral sex.

Although up to 5% of HIV infections might be giving someone a blowjob, this probably depends on two factors. One is that viral load need to be very high in the positive partner and the second it that the negative partner probably need to have mouth problems, for example if they have bleeding gums, a cut in their mouth or recent dental work.

More information about HIV sexual transmission is included in this guide, which has a section on oral sex.

Hi Spanky, this is not a risk for HIV. You do not have HIV from this event.

Please see here for more information about testing and transmission: https://i-base.info/qa/factsheets/hiv-transmission-and-testing

I had given cunnilingus to a hooker 3 Feb 2024, But no intercourse with or without condom occured . I was scared so I managed to perform hiv test to that same hooker , the test came negetive. I don’t remember weather I had any mouth ulcer in my mouth on 3rd Feb I was drunk but I can assure you that I have no dental problem like bleeding gums or recently done dental work. All I did is to make out and I licked his clit or vulva for max 2 mins 1 min each time. The hiv test was done on that hooker 8 Feb which is 5 days later the potential exposure. Now I am worried . Please help me this anxiety is killing me. I have done the test from a private clinic which has very good rating and reputation. Please help me please

Hi Rana, oral sex carries little to no risk of HIV transmission. A fever alone is not suggestive of HIV transmission.

Hi Bob, condoms prevent the risk from HIV and oral sex is not a significant risk for HIV.

HIV doesn’t cause sysmptoms after a few days – but other STIs can. If you are worried about other STI’s then a general health screen is a good idea, but you might just be worrying and anxious.

Please see info on oral sex here:
