Q and A

Question

Can I get married if I am HIV positive?

Hi. Can I marry if I am HIV positive? I am only 28 male, and just diagnosed. How long I can live if I start HAART in future? Do you also think there will be more treatement options in future? Thank you

Answer

Yes, most countries have no legal obstacles against marriage, though many countries do have laws that saw you need to tell your partner about your HIV status. There are some countries where discrimination limits human rights, so it also depends where you live.

Many HIV positive men get married – to partners who are either HIV positive or HIV negative. If their partner is HIV-negative it is still possible to have children

Hi Amol, it is always recommended to test even when risk is low/zero.

Oral sex carries little to no risk of transmission. There has never been a documented case of transmission via this route.

More information about testing and transmission can be found here: https://i-base.info/guides/testing

Hi Ajay, it is great to hear how well you are doing on treatment. Yes you can marry someone HIV negative, your status should not impact your ability to marry.

It is a legal requirement to disclose your status prior to marriage in India.

As you have an undetectable viral load there is no risk of transmission to your partner. This is called U=U: https://i-base.info/u-equals-u/

Hi SK, I am sorry but i-Base isn’t able to connect people for personal relationships but other organisations allow personal adverts. It might be better for your son to be doing this himself though. Perhaps suggest looking at services run by http://www.poz.com.

Hi Bernard, do you current have a sex life with your partner? do you know if she is on treatment?

When someone is on treatment with a viral load below 200/undetectable it is impossible to pass on HIV to their partner. This includes having sex without a condom. This also makes the risk of passing HIV to a baby less than 1%.

    This is called U=U: https://i-base.info/u-equals-u/

When on treatment and doing well there are no costs associated with HIV. Treatment will let someone lead a healthy life without it impacting on their health/finances.
