Q and A

Question

Can I get married if I am HIV positive?

Hi. Can I marry if I am HIV positive? I am only 28 male, and just diagnosed. How long I can live if I start HAART in future? Do you also think there will be more treatement options in future? Thank you

Answer

Yes, most countries have no legal obstacles against marriage, though many countries do have laws that saw you need to tell your partner about your HIV status. There are some countries where discrimination limits human rights, so it also depends where you live.

Many HIV positive men get married – to partners who are either HIV positive or HIV negative. If their partner is HIV-negative it is still possible to have children

    Hi Jeremiah.

Dating for people who are positive can be difficult. It is however possible. Have you thought about maybe dating other people who are positive?

Hi Maggie, It can be hard telling a new partner you’re positive. But as Lisa says on this question here, some people do understand. Many people around the world are now in happy relationships where one is HIV positive and the other is not. You can try contacting Treatment Action Campaign. If you live in South Africa they might be able to offer support.

    Good evening Quadri,

Do you mean your viral load test is below 30 copies? If so, that means HIV is undetectable. The good thing is, when you’re undetectable you can have sex without condoms and you cannot transmit HIV. You can find out more from the PARTNER study here.

More good news is that you can have a wife and children who are HIV negative. As Simon says here, “The simple answer is a definite “yes” as being on modern HIV treatment also protects your partner.”

Hi Devanand, I am sorry that i-base can’t help directly, but perhaps other HIV organisations in your country can help. Some HIV online community dating services are international (www.poz.com). Many online apps also let you create profiles where you can mention HIV as part of your profile. I am sure there is someone who will be right for you.

Hi Nelwisa, thanks for writing about your experience. You sound like you are strong and in a good place. As long as you are good taking the meds they are likely to work for years and years (and years), This really needs your viral load to be undetectable, but this test is not always available in some countries.
