Q and A

Question

Is my CD4 count and viral load within the normal ranges?

I am currently on treatment my latest result were: viral load 29 and CD4 count 431 is this within accepteble ranges?

Answer

Thank you for your question.

Your results are very good. Once you are on treatment the most important thing to monitor is your viral load which should, wherever possible, remain under 50 copies/mL. Some people get the occassional ‘blip’ where the viral load goes up a little bit and then down again. This is nothing to worry about. Your viral load of 29 is very good.

Which treatments are you on? Have you experienced any side effects? When did you start treatment?

Hi Samon, are you still taking the antibiotic cotrimoxazole as well as HIV treatment? This is usually prescribed when the CD4 count is low. If yes, this sometimes causes allergy-type reactions. Otherwise, anything related to skin problems is something then your doctor needs to know about.

Hi Gugu – it is good you are on treatment. Having a low viral load is very important and this is almost undetectable. Your CD4 count should also get a bit higher before the baby is due and this is also good for both you and the baby. The best thing you can do is to be careful with taking all your meds. So far your results are all good though.

Hi Iris, if your viral load is about 5000 on treatment, this is something to talk to your doctor about. If you have been taking all your meds, then in the UK this would usually mean changing treatment. In some countries, if there are less treatment choices, sometimes people have to stay on treatment until the CD4 count starts to fall. Please talk to your doctor though because changing treatment would be better if you have this choice.

Hi Ekeke. Thanks for you question but I need a bit more information before I can help. Please could you say how long you have been on treatment and the names of your meds. Also what your CD4 count and viral load was before you started treatment. If you have just started treatment then your CD4 count should slowly increase.
