Q and A

Question

My boyfriend just tested positive and I tested negative how could this happen?

My boyfriend just tested positive and I tested negative. We’ve been together for over a year now and have had unprotected sex the whole time. He says that the doctor told him he’s been infected since before we started dating. Is this possible to actually tell when you got infected?

This makes me believe that he may have been cheating on me the past few months but he says he hasn’t and I just have to accept this. So what are the chances that after having unprotected sex with an HIV positive person for over a year, I’m not infected?

Answer

Thank you for your question.

There is a test which can be done to see whether someone was recently infected or not. For more information please follow this link and scan down to the end of the section called ‘antibody tests’ where it mentions STARHS testing.

With regards to your question about how it is possible you could have been having unprotected sex with your boyfriend without getting HIV, please follow this link to a similar question which gives a more specific answer.
