Question

Is it safe to use Aloe Vera?

Thanks for the help on information rendered in 2010. Happy New Year too!

I would like to find out if it is safe to use Aloe Vera if you are HIV positive with a CD4 count of over 1000. I have been taking it for over 3 years. Are there any known side effects or studies conducted on Aloe Vera?

Answer

Thank you for your question and a Happy New Year to you too.

It is fine to use Aloe Vera, there are no interactions with HIV medications.

Hi King, it is very good that you have started HIV treatment. This will help your CD4 count get stronger and will help your long-term health. Aloe vera gel does not interact with your HIV meds. It is okay to use both.

    Hi Zipho,

If you want to use alovera gel on your skin that’s fine.

Hi again Tols, how did your gallbladder operation go?
It’s important to discuss this with your doctor or pharmacist before taking ciplactin. Without knowing which ARVs you are taking I can’t tell you if this is likely to affect your HIV treatment. Ciplactin is usually used to treat allergies not for weight gain, although this may be recommended in certain situations. If you want to gain weight your doctor should be able to give you suggestions for healthy ways to do this.

    Hi Helen,
Can I ask where you live? In many countries you can get free HIV treatment through government clinics. It’s important you and your daughter are being monitored so you know when to start ARVs. Do you know what your CD4 counts are?

To enable me to answer this question I would need to know if you have already started taking HIV meds or not? If you have not started taking HIV treatment yet and your CD4 count has dropped to between 250-350 then you will need to start thinking about taking them. Once you start HIV treatment you will find your viral load decreases and your CD4 count increases again.

If you are already on treatment and your viral load has increased and your CD4 decreased then this could either be due to a ‘blip’ which will go away again or it could be because you have developed resistance to the medication you are on. You should ask your doctor for repeat CD4 and viral load tests as soon as possible. This will tell you whether or not it is a blip. For more information on HIV viral load blips follow this link.

I am taking supplements such as siprulina, centrum which is A-Z Vitamins, chinese green tea but not everyday. Are there any other special herbs to take for this killer?
