Q and A

Question

Can I used Lamzid (AZT/3TC) to reduce the risk of infection?

I’m dating a person who is HIV positive and I’m HIV negative. Is it good for me to use Aspen’s Lamzid when we have sex?

Will it cause a problem as time goes on.

Answer

Please do NOT use Lamzid in this way.

Firstly, there is no evidence that it will protect you from catching HIV.

Secondly, there are risks from you taking these meds. If you have hepatitis B or catch hepatitis B taking the 3TC in Lamzid could cause liver problems if you are stopping and starting the drug. If you were unlucky enough to catch HIV, your use of Lamzid is likely to make you resistant to 3TC which could then affect both you and your partners future treatment options (if you passed that resistance back to your partner).

Is your partner on treatment? If and when this happens, this reduce the risk of transmitting HIV.

Using a condom is still the most effective way to do this though.

I think people are now playing with meds because we have a shortage problem in Africa, please be considerate!

Being late with your medication once should not cause any problems. This is only likely to cause a problem if you are regularly late or forget to take doses.

Using lamzid in this way is called post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP). Please follow this link for more information about PEP.

    Hi
My condom burst while having sex, the next morning I went to the doctor, and the doctor tested me and I was negative. He put me on this pills aspen lamzid, so my question is how powerful are the pills? Are they effective enough to destroy the virus?

This is not reported as a side effect of Lamzid.

As with any symptoms this is something to discuss with your doctor or nurse in case it is related to another sexually transmitted infection.

Hi Robinson. It’s important to treat any STIs. Your doctor or nurse will be able to check for any drug interactions with Lamzid. Having an STI can not tell you whether you have been infected with HIV. For more informaiton about testing and PEP please follow this link to our guide to HIV testing and sexual transmission.

    Hi Sgush,

PEP should be taken for 28 days. Your doctor may have given you a 7-day starter pack, after which you need to continue PEP for 3 more weeks.

You should not have unprotected sex with your wife for the full course of PEP, and then also for 28 days afterwards- when you should be tested for HIV. Until this point you can not be sure that you are HIV negative and could be putting your wife at risk of infection. Please follow this link for more information about PEP.
