Q and A

Question

I am taking PEP, can I have uprotected sex?

I’ve been taking lamzid for 5 days now and I want to find out how this will
affect my pregnant partner when we have unprotected sex?

I am taking lamzid because I slept with someone without a condom and I felt
very unsafe so I went to the doctor within 72 hours and he prescribed lamzid for me.

My pregnant partner is only 7weeks pregnant will this harm our baby?

Answer

There is no data on whether PEP can harm the unborn baby. However, unprotected sex whilst you are taking PEP is not recommended. This is because you don’t know your status and you could infect your partner. That is why it is important to wait until you finish the course and have done the follow-up confirmatory test.

    Hi Bingwa,

Condomless sex is not recommended while you’re taking PEP. It’s important to wait until you finish the course of PEP and have done the follow-up HIV test.

I had sex with HIV positive woman, I tested negative and I was given PEP before 72 hrs. After 6 days I had uprotected sex with my girlfriend who is HIV negative..Is their a possibility that I have infected her . Urgent advice

    Hi Masih,

Unfortunately we don’t have resources to answer more questions on HIV testing and risk.

But all FAQs are answered through this link.

Hello, I had unprotected sex with a woman and two days later I went to the dr and got put on PEP. About a week or two after starting PEP I had unprotected sex with my girlfriend 3 times in a 2 day span. I finished my PEP medication and tested negative for HIV 6 weeks after I completed the medicine. My question is, is it possible that I may have given HIV to my girlfriend even though I tested negative 6 weeks after the medicine was completed?

    Hi Anj,

Even without a condom, the risk from a single exposure is less than, for example, 1 in 300.

And as Simon says on this Q&A, One of the easiest and most effective ways is just for the HIV positive partner to be on treatment. An undetectable viral load makes HIV untransmittable. (Please see U=U).

But can you get to see a doctor about PEP? What country do you live in?

    Hi
I had unprotected sex and he confess to me that he is hiv positive. I immediately took hiv test and it was negative. Is there any chance that it could not transmit to me since he told me that he is taking antiretroviral? I am so worried right because in our place the PEP is not available in any pharmacy. PLEASE can someone enlighten me about this.

    Hi James,

If you were on PEP for 7 days it’s likely that there was no risk from this second time. Please look at the i-Base site for risks of transmission http://i-base.info/hiv-testing-and-risks-of-sexual-transmission/

Also please see this link to PrEP and PEP.

Thanks for your quick response, I appreciate. I was taking PEP 7 days earlier as I had sex without condom with a lady that we tested for HIV and results came out negative but I read something about windows period so i took pep to be 100% sure am HIV negative
Then as I was on PEP for 7 days I had sex with another lady who turned out to be HIV positive and i used condom Protection but we deep kissed and I fingered her
I do have bleeding gum and am afraid of microscopic wound on finger that I might not be aware of
Am currently continuing with PEP and am asking if I can extend it to 35 days instead of 28 days

    Hi James,

This looks like very low risk, especially as you used condoms. Were you already on PEP when you met this lady? If you’re already on PEP and your partner was taking HIV treatment it doesn’t look like an exposure. What does your doctor say?
