Q and A

Question

I am taking PEP, can I have uprotected sex?

I’ve been taking lamzid for 5 days now and I want to find out how this will
affect my pregnant partner when we have unprotected sex?

I am taking lamzid because I slept with someone without a condom and I felt
very unsafe so I went to the doctor within 72 hours and he prescribed lamzid for me.

My pregnant partner is only 7weeks pregnant will this harm our baby?

Answer

There is no data on whether PEP can harm the unborn baby. However, unprotected sex whilst you are taking PEP is not recommended. This is because you don’t know your status and you could infect your partner. That is why it is important to wait until you finish the course and have done the follow-up confirmatory test.

    Hi N.D.

You’re right PEP needs to be taken as soon as possible after exposure. Please see more info about PEP here.

    Hi Ellen,

As Angelina says here, unprotected sex whilst you are taking PEP is not recommended. This is because you don’t know your status and you could infect your partner.

However, if your partner is taking HIV treatment (ART) and has an undetectable viral load, they can not transmit HIV to you if you are negative.

Hello.. I need advice please, I’m on PEP medication. My concern is, is it safe to have unprotected sex with an HIV person while on PEP medication?

    Hi Nobz,

After a course of PEP you need to wait 28 days before testing for HIV. This is because PEP can delay infection. So if you test HIV negative you do not have HIV. Please see this link for more info about PEP.

    Hi Federico,

Unfortunatley i-Base don’t have resources to answer more questions on HIV risk and transmission. Please see this link for all frequently asked questions. And please see this link to info about PEP and PEPSE.

Hi I am Federico . I am posting this message because I was on holiday to Thailand . I got some little drops of seminal liquid into my eyes from a ladyboy . So after 14 hours I went into the hospital and I got the Genvoya pills used as Pep . After taking it for 4 days, I had bottom anal sex for few seconds with an other partner. The following 2 days I had top anal sex with the same partner for few seconds. After 8 days I had a complete top anal sex with an other partner . The following day too. But this last tested negative . In the totality I had been taking 30 pills of Genvoya and then I have stopped taking it for 4 days because of the Covid19 emergency .
Supposing that all the partners are positive to the HIV excluding the last one, I wonder how am I likely to be tested positive when I do the blood test

    Hi Dominica,

It’s not possible to say if the PEP will be effective or not as you’ve had several risks over a different period. You’re going to need to take the full course of PEP and test once you’ve finished.
