Q and A

Question

I am taking PEP, can I have uprotected sex?

I’ve been taking lamzid for 5 days now and I want to find out how this will
affect my pregnant partner when we have unprotected sex?

I am taking lamzid because I slept with someone without a condom and I felt
very unsafe so I went to the doctor within 72 hours and he prescribed lamzid for me.

My pregnant partner is only 7weeks pregnant will this harm our baby?

Answer

There is no data on whether PEP can harm the unborn baby. However, unprotected sex whilst you are taking PEP is not recommended. This is because you don’t know your status and you could infect your partner. That is why it is important to wait until you finish the course and have done the follow-up confirmatory test.

Hi Nick, if the PEP contains tenofovir (and either lamivudine or emtricitabine) it will also be acting as PrEP. This means you would be protected by PrEP.

Hi I have been taking pep but unfortunately yesterday I had a condomless sex. Am I at risk of becoming HIV positive?

    Hi ENL,

Can I ask if you used condoms?

However, as Angelina says above, having sex without condoms while you are taking PEP is not recommended. This is because you don’t know your status and you could infect your partner if they are HIV negative.

Please see this link to PrEP. If you are HIV negative PrEP can protect you from HIV before you have condomless sex.

    Hi Steder,

Accidents with condoms do happen. But it’s not likely that your negative partner will become positive because of this.

PEP is used to stop HIV infection. It doesn’t get rid of HIV infection.

Sometimes if PEP hasn’t been started soon enough it can delay infection. That’s why you need an HIV test after 28 days to check that it’s worked.

There’s more info on PEP here.

I had sex with a positive person and started with PEP.
After 10 days I had sex with my negative partner and the condom broke and I spermed in her
Is it possible that I might infect her while my system is trying to get rid of the infection in my system. N I might end up negative. N she might be positive. Is that possible…or it’s just my imagination.

    Hi Dee,

It’s not recommended to have condomless sex while you’re taking PEP. That’s because you don’t know your HIV status.

For lots more info about PEP, please see this link.
