Q and A

Question

I am taking PEP, can I have uprotected sex?

I’ve been taking lamzid for 5 days now and I want to find out how this will
affect my pregnant partner when we have unprotected sex?

I am taking lamzid because I slept with someone without a condom and I felt
very unsafe so I went to the doctor within 72 hours and he prescribed lamzid for me.

My pregnant partner is only 7weeks pregnant will this harm our baby?

Answer

There is no data on whether PEP can harm the unborn baby. However, unprotected sex whilst you are taking PEP is not recommended. This is because you don’t know your status and you could infect your partner. That is why it is important to wait until you finish the course and have done the follow-up confirmatory test.

    Hi Stephen,

Just take the last 3 tablets, you don’t need to take another course.

Hey can someone help me? I was in 25th day on PEP. The recommended time was 28 days PEP on TLD ( Tenofovir, Lamivudine. I had sex and the condom was broken and I was receptive partner and my partner came in me.
Should I take 28 days more PEP, or is it enough to take those extra 3 days dosage. Cause the package includes the dosage for 28 days

Hi Mpho, is your partner taking HIV drugs? Do you know if their viral load is undetectable? If yes, then there is no risk of you catching HIV.

In the UK, you would not need to be taking the Aluvia and Combozil (called PEP). If your partner has a detectable viral load, then the PEP will protect you.

Please see this link about how HIV meds prevent risk of transmission.

Hi Trave, what meds were you given as PEP? If they include two drugs called tenofovir and emticitabine then the two extra doses will have been enough. This is because these two drugs are used as PrEP and event based dosing only needs two doses afterwards to give you full protection. See: https://i-base.info/guides/prep/on-demand

Hey, can someone help me? I was in 26 days course of my pep. I should take 28 days pep. I had sex and the condom was broken and i was receptive partner and my partner came in me.
Should i take 28 days more pep, or is it enough to take those extra 2 days dosage. Cause the package includes the dosage for 30 days

I would appreciate for any answer

    Hi Nahashon,

If your partner is on medication and her viral load is undetectable, there’s no risk to you. Please see here: https://i-base.info/u-equals-u/
It also means that you don’t need to take PrEP.

If your partners viral load is detectable, if you’re using PrEP, the risk will be reduced.

If I have a partner who has HIV and she is using medicine, and I’m using PrEP, can we have sex without a condom?

    Hi Enna,

Why are you both taking PEP? If you’ve both had risks, then you need to use condoms, this is until you’re both aware of your status.
