Q and A

Question

I am taking PEP, can I have uprotected sex?

I’ve been taking lamzid for 5 days now and I want to find out how this will
affect my pregnant partner when we have unprotected sex?

I am taking lamzid because I slept with someone without a condom and I felt
very unsafe so I went to the doctor within 72 hours and he prescribed lamzid for me.

My pregnant partner is only 7weeks pregnant will this harm our baby?

Answer

There is no data on whether PEP can harm the unborn baby. However, unprotected sex whilst you are taking PEP is not recommended. This is because you don’t know your status and you could infect your partner. That is why it is important to wait until you finish the course and have done the follow-up confirmatory test.

    Hi there,
I found out my partner has been on pep…seems today was his 15th day of taking…could the HIV have suppressed because I had sex with him last night?

Hi Bonny, no there is no risk to your wife. While it is still not recommended to have unprotected sex while on PEP due to you being unaware of your own status, it would not be possible to pass on HIV to your wife.

While on PEP you will either be negative, or PEP will suppress HIV to such low levels it is impossible to pass on HIV.

Hi I’m currently on day 9 of pep after I had Unprotected sex with HIV + person and I had Unprotected sex with my wife who is currently negative and I tested negative before I started pep … is my wife at risk of contacting the virus?

Hi Lindokuhle, are you using on-demand dosing or daily PrEP? and had you taken PrEP every day including the day before you had sex?

Or do you mean you had used PrEP one day and the PEP the day after?

PrEP and PEP are very similar medications. PEP contains 3 whereas PrEP contains 2. It is likely the PrEP drugs were in the PEP combination and it will still provide protection. Though as this is not a recommended course of treatment the same level of protection cannot be guaranteed than if you were to take it as prescribed.

Hi Joseph, while on PEP it is not recommended to have sex and if you do you should use a condom. This is because while on PEP you are unsure of your status and even though very small, there is some small risk of HIV transmission.

You can return to your regular sex life with your wife after you have confirmed your status. The earliest you can do this is 6 weeks after the last dose of PEP using a 4th generation test.

Hi Ronah, unfortunately after 7 days there is no benefit to taking PEP. PEP should be started within 72 hours after the exposure. Any later than this and PEP will have no effect at preventing HIV transmission.

For information about transmission and risk please see here: https://i-base.info/qa/factsheets/hiv-transmission-and-testing

After a week, we went for a blood test and it so happened the guy is HIV positive and l was negative, after the tests l went on PEP medication, does this increase my risk of HIV since l started my dosage after 7 days after exposure. Help me out Thank you
