Q and A

Question

I am taking PEP, can I have uprotected sex?

I’ve been taking lamzid for 5 days now and I want to find out how this will
affect my pregnant partner when we have unprotected sex?

I am taking lamzid because I slept with someone without a condom and I felt
very unsafe so I went to the doctor within 72 hours and he prescribed lamzid for me.

My pregnant partner is only 7weeks pregnant will this harm our baby?

Answer

There is no data on whether PEP can harm the unborn baby. However, unprotected sex whilst you are taking PEP is not recommended. This is because you don’t know your status and you could infect your partner. That is why it is important to wait until you finish the course and have done the follow-up confirmatory test.

Hi Disura, your tests are conclusive and you do not have HIV.

Please see here for more information about testing and transmission: https://i-base.info/qa/factsheets/hiv-transmission-and-testing

Have you had any treatment for leukoplakia and/or had it assessed by a doctor? It can be confused for thrush which is much more common and can be treated with medication.

Hi Josh, I started PEP around 48 hours after having sexual intercourse with a woman who may or may not had hiv. few days near the end of the PEP treatment, I got symptoms like Leukoplakia and a slightly Swollen Lymp Node on neck below the side jaw line.
I was never sexually or romntically involved with anyone again after starting PEP. I was also tested (blood) after 2 weeks finishing PEP and again on another 45 days (also blood test). But the Leukoplakia symptomps on toungue is still there eventhough it’s been roughly 6 months after finishing PEP and I can slightly feel the lymp node below the jaw line.

Hi CNW, no there is no risk of transmission to your partner. While on PEP there is either no risk of HIV due to it working, OR PEP will suppress HIV so much that there is no risk and it is not possible to pass HIV on.

For more information about PEP please see here: https://i-base.info/qa/factsheets/pep-faq

    Have
I’ve been on pep for 24 days now and I just had unprotected sex with a negative person.
Is there a chance I might have infected him?
I tested negative before starting pep

Hi Kenny, yes PEP will still help. While on PEP you are protected from further exposures and you do not need to extend the course of your treatment.

As long as you have 2 days remaining of your course of PEP from the last exposure, you can stop treatment when originally expected.

More information about PEP can be found here: https://i-base.info/qa/factsheets/pep-faq

While on PEP it is not recommended to have sex as you are unsure of your status, using a condom is advised to help prevent any further transmission risk of HIV and/or other STIs.

I had a needle prick on the ward and my patient and I tested negative for HIV but I’ve been taking the PeP but I don’t think I can continue doing it and I want to stop after 20 days of taking it , can I stop taking it?

Hi France, as long as the patient from whom you had this needle-stick injury has tested negative you can stop taking PEP.

This patient testing negative shows that there is no risk of HIV.

Hi Patpong, you do not need to extend your course of PEP. When on PEP it will also work like PrEP.

Because of this you are protected from further exposures for the duration of the course of PEP. You can complete your course when originally planned.

Hi, I have a question. At 26th December I received an oral job and rubbing my penis outside of the a girl vagina and this girl is working in a high risk industry. After consulting with doctor, I decided to take PEP starting from the same day. I took my PEP everyday at the same time

At 31st December (before my 6th PEP), I had unprotected sex with the same girl and I am worried should I extend my PEP drug for another 5 days?
