Q and A

Question

I am taking PEP, can I have uprotected sex?

I’ve been taking lamzid for 5 days now and I want to find out how this will
affect my pregnant partner when we have unprotected sex?

I am taking lamzid because I slept with someone without a condom and I felt
very unsafe so I went to the doctor within 72 hours and he prescribed lamzid for me.

My pregnant partner is only 7weeks pregnant will this harm our baby?

Answer

There is no data on whether PEP can harm the unborn baby. However, unprotected sex whilst you are taking PEP is not recommended. This is because you don’t know your status and you could infect your partner. That is why it is important to wait until you finish the course and have done the follow-up confirmatory test.

Hi Evamce, your wife does not need to be on PEP. There is no risk of transmission to your wife.

Being on PEP means there is either no presence of HIV or HIV is suppressed so much by PEP that you cannot pass HIV on.

More information about PEP can be found here: https://i-base.info/qa/factsheets/pep-faq

Hi N/a, no you have not put your gf at risk. Either there is no presence of HIV or PEP will suppress HIV so much that it is impossible to pass on HIV. Your gf is safe.

Please see here for more information about PEP: https://i-base.info/qa/factsheets/pep-faq

Hi on feb 11th, I had unprotected sex where I finished inside of a sex worker while being drunk. 7 hours later I went and got pep medication and started it right away, the medications are named isentress, and truvada. On feb 25th I had unprotected sex with my gf. My question did may have I put her at risk for potential hiv exposure ? I finish the course of pep on March 9th

Hi Japhta, is your girlfriend taking this as PrEP or as HIV treatment?

If your girlfriend is HIV positive do you know her viral load? If your girlfriend is on treatment with a viral load below 200 there is no risk of transmission. You can have sex without a condom. Treatment will suppress HIV so much that it is impossible to pass on HIV via sex.

This is called U=U and is explained here: https://i-base.info/u-equals-u/

Hi Chariet, as you are on PEP there is no further risk of transmission. You are protected form further exposures for the duration of the PEP course and your partner does not need to be on treatment themselves.

More information about PEP can be found here: https://i-base.info/qa/factsheets/pep-faq
