Q and A

Question

Does Atroiza have interactions with TB meds?

I am taking atroiza the fixed dose ARV combination in South Africa so I want to know if it does not have any drug interaction with TB medication?

Answer

Hello,

Atroiza is a once daily combination pill which contains three drugs -efavirenz, emtricibatine and tenofovir. This combination is made by several drug companies and is also called Tribuss, Trustiva, Odimune.  These are all generic versions of Atripla.

This combination can have an interaction with some TB medications that may require a dose adjustment. If Atroiza is co-administered with rifampicin to patients weighing 50 kg or more, an additional 200 mg/day (800 mg total) of efavirenz may be considered. It is important to discuss this with your doctor or pharmacist as this will vary across individuals.

    Hi Lerato,
HIV treatment will not make you blind. But it’s important to talk to the clinic about your eyes. It’s important to make sure you don’t have an infection.

Hi Lebohang, It’s good that you’re starting treatment. This can reduce the amount of HIV in your blood – called viral load – very quickly. And this can help your CD4 count to recover, although this usually is a slower change. But it’s not possible to estimate it. Here’s another answer to the same question.

Hi Mpho, if your partner was on HIV treatment, then you would not be at risk, even without condoms. This means PEP is not needed.

Even if you don’t feel like eating, its important that you try to look after yourself. Have you thought about chaning treatment?

    Hi Hope,

Though not ideal when you are first starting medication, you will be OK. This is because there is evidence to show that its possible to take atrozia less often. For more info please see the results from the FOTO study:

What you need to do now is take them as soon as possible. And try to remember to take them, even if there is stress at home.
