Q and A

Question

Does Atroiza have interactions with TB meds?

I am taking atroiza the fixed dose ARV combination in South Africa so I want to know if it does not have any drug interaction with TB medication?

Answer

Hello,

Atroiza is a once daily combination pill which contains three drugs -efavirenz, emtricibatine and tenofovir. This combination is made by several drug companies and is also called Tribuss, Trustiva, Odimune.  These are all generic versions of Atripla.

This combination can have an interaction with some TB medications that may require a dose adjustment. If Atroiza is co-administered with rifampicin to patients weighing 50 kg or more, an additional 200 mg/day (800 mg total) of efavirenz may be considered. It is important to discuss this with your doctor or pharmacist as this will vary across individuals.

    Hi Lulu,
These side effects are very normal with Atroiza. This can be hard but usually this will improve after the first few weeks of treatment. These side effects are caused by one of the three drugs in Atrioza which is called efavirenz. You can read more about them in our side effects guide. I hope that you start to feel better very soon!

I have just started with my treatment Atroiza on the 28 of may 2013. I take mine at night The first two days I felt numb and dizzy now I have a problem with sleeping, I would sleep for a few hours and find that 2-3hours I’m wide awake.

    Hi Thembie,
It’s important to see your doctor about this. Running stomaches (diarrhea) can usually be easily treated- you don’t have to put up with this! See this page in our side effects guide for more info

    Hi Octavia,
Is the itching in your feet like when you have a rash or dry skin, or is it a tingling like if you have been sitting on your feet and the blood has stopped going to them? If it is a tingling then it is important to talk to your doctor incase you are experiencing peripheral neuropathy

It is normal to have some side effects when starting treatment. Usually these will improve after the first few weeks. If this itching continues or gets worse do talk to your doctor. You can also see this page about skin conditions in our side effects guide.

As with any symptoms, this is something to discuss with your doctor. Some people who are diagnosed HIV positive when their CD4 count is already very low, have nerve damage caused by HIV. This is called neuropathy. Another cause is the HIV drug stavudine (d4T).

It sounds like your doctor is giving you good advice. As you take Atroiza at night, it is not a common side effect to be sick the following morning. Pregnancy on the other hand is associated with morning sickness, especially in the first few months.

Tell your doctor though if this continues or becomes more difficult or if you continue to be worried.

I started the Atroiza combination drug on the 9th of april. I have been just vomiting in the mornings but my doc said it might be not the treatment but the pregnancy.
