Q and A

Question

Does Atroiza have interactions with TB meds?

I am taking atroiza the fixed dose ARV combination in South Africa so I want to know if it does not have any drug interaction with TB medication?

Answer

Hello,

Atroiza is a once daily combination pill which contains three drugs -efavirenz, emtricibatine and tenofovir. This combination is made by several drug companies and is also called Tribuss, Trustiva, Odimune.  These are all generic versions of Atripla.

This combination can have an interaction with some TB medications that may require a dose adjustment. If Atroiza is co-administered with rifampicin to patients weighing 50 kg or more, an additional 200 mg/day (800 mg total) of efavirenz may be considered. It is important to discuss this with your doctor or pharmacist as this will vary across individuals.

It is okay to be a little early or late sometimes. It is good to get into the habit of aiming for one time. With Atroiza uou have at least a window of an hour or so either side when it will still be fine.

    Hi,

Your viral load tell you how much virus is in your blood. A viral load of 193 is low and this is what you want. If you are on treatment it should relatively quickly become undetectable.

You can find more information about viral load here:

    Hi,

The side effects of Atroiza are usually associated with efavirenz. Efavirenz is one of the three medication in Atroiza. These can often include difficulty sleeping and mood changes.

It is usually recommended that you take Atroiza before you go to sleep. This is because you will be sleeping when drug levels are highest and side effects are likely to occur. It is also recommended that you take Atroiza either on an empty stomach or with a low-fat meal. This is because a high fat meal can increase drug levels and side effects.
