Question

Does Atroiza have interactions with TB meds?

I am taking atroiza the fixed dose ARV combination in South Africa so I want to know if it does not have any drug interaction with TB medication?

Answer

Hello,

Atroiza is a once daily combination pill which contains three drugs -efavirenz, emtricibatine and tenofovir. This combination is made by several drug companies and is also called Tribuss, Trustiva, Odimune.  These are all generic versions of Atripla.

This combination can have an interaction with some TB medications that may require a dose adjustment. If Atroiza is co-administered with rifampicin to patients weighing 50 kg or more, an additional 200 mg/day (800 mg total) of efavirenz may be considered. It is important to discuss this with your doctor or pharmacist as this will vary across individuals.

Hi Xolile – has you told your doctor about this? If yes, what did they say. If no, then please tell them about this. They might be other HIV meds you can use. Also, what is your CD4 count? I ask this in case you can finish the TB course first and then start ARVs later.

The main drug in Atroiza (efavirenz) sometimes causes bad dreams or low mood. And generally side effects often come in the first weeks and months after you start HIV treatment.

Unfortunately we’re not doctors and we can’t comment on symptoms like this. It’s very important that you talk to your doctor about the symptoms and what’s causing them.

I just started taking Atroiza and after about 2 years my private parts, front and back started burning. Is this normal? What can I do about it and how long will this last?

Hi, Sorry to hear this, it does sound like a very worrying situation. It’s important that you talk straight away to your doctor about your high blood pressure. It sounds like you’re at risk of a heart attack or stroke. There are not reports of uncontrollable rises in blood pressure after taking Atroiza or Odimundine. And there are no expected interactions between captopril and the drugs in Atroiza or Odimudine. It is unlikely that your ARVs are causing blood pressure problems.

Unfortunately, these symptoms are beyond the direct information we can help with. And so it’s very important to talk to your doctor urgently and that they investigate what is causing this problem.

Hallo, I am on ARV and currently taking Atroiza, or Odimudine, depending which one is available at our pharmacy. I am also hypertensive and take captopril 25mg, was taking pharmapress 10mg combined with ridaq 12.5mg. I take the ARV at 20h00 and the Blood Pressure med in the morning. My BP would always rise uncontrollably at night with bad feelings of a stroke on my left side. The BP medication was changed to Captopril 25mg which is working well, but after taking the ARV at night, then again my BP is getting uncontrolable. What could be the course of this, is there an interaction in the ARV and BP drugs? Concerned because I always find myself in a lifetreatening situation, everyday.

    Hi,

If you’re talking about Atroiza this reaction is normal. It usually takes 2 or 3 weeks for your body to get used to new meds. If it is getting too much, or if your work is being effected you can ask your clinic to change your meds.
