if currently stavudine (d4T) is not available, can it be replaced with zidovudine (AZT)?
Answer
Hi
Usually d4T and AZT can be switched very easily – but they should never be used in the same combination.
So yes, if there is a problem with the supply of d4T, then AZT should be fine, but you should check with your doctor first in case your previous health may suggest otherwise (ie higher risk of anaemia).
Many people prefer AZT to d4T because the risk of side effects (fat loss and neuropathy) are lower. In many countries, AZT is now being replaced by either tenofovir or abacavir, again because of fewer side effects.
