Q and A

Question

Will using formula milk protect my baby?

I’m not breastfeeding my 7 week old baby. She has a fever and blocked nose. Can I give her panando and iliadin, I’m not sure about the dosage. I’m scared as I don’t want my baby to be infected by HIV. Can my baby still get HIV from formula or water?

Answer

Hi there,

Congratulations on having a baby.

By giving your baby formula instead of breast milk you are doing the best you can reduce any risk of transmission. Your baby cannot get HIV from formula or water.

As for the fever and the blocked nose it is best to go speak to your doctor as your baby is below 2 months old. There are infant formulations of the drugs you mentioned but it is best to check with your doctor first when it is safe to use them.

Please let me know if you have anymore questions.

Hi Nana, one day will not make a difference, but it is better to talk to your doctor. It might be important to try the formula feed again after this.

Hi Maki – this is something you need to ask the nurse or doctor. This will depend on your individual situation, but there is usually a lot of choice for you both.
