Q and A

Question

Is my partner at risk if I missed meds for two days?

Hi, I have been hiv undetectable for 7-8 years, and never missed medication.

The other day i stayed over partners and we discovered I forgot my Eviplera medication. I couldn’t go back and take it for about 48 hours. We spent some time looking online to find out if it was ok and if we can have sex.

After the second day when we had sex he did take PrEP after but i understand this isnt how you are meant to use it (he stopped taking it everyday the week before). I found information online that said it was ok, but after doing it I still unsettled and I am worried. As soon as i could i took my medication again.

Would my viral load come back in 2 days?

Also do i hold of on having sex again. I know U=U but do i have the conversation with my partner to still take prep everyday, even though he wanted to come off it?

Please help

Answer

Hi there

Thanks for your question but please do not worry.

You have done amazingly well at adherence.

Being undetectable for so many years means that levels of HIV will be so low that even missing meds for a few days means that your partner will still be protected.

Your viral load would still have stayed undetectable and your partner didn’t need PrEP. This means you don’t need to worry about his PrEP doing either.

In someone whose has been undetectable for many years, you would probably need to stop treatment for at least a week before it becomes detectable.
