Q and A

Question

Could you explain my results and opportunistic infections?

Could you tell why my CD4 count is 94 and my viral load is12000? Does having a low viral load mean
I will reach undetectable level quicker and how long my CD4 count will take to return to normal levels? I strted ARVs 1 week ago.
Also I have a severe fungal infection around the groin. Will this get better once my CD4 rises as have had this for some time and won’t go? Alss, is there any link between HIV and arthritis?

Finally, is there a heterosexual support group that you can recommend?

Answer

94 is a bit low result for CD4, but once you are already on therapy, it is expected that this situation will improve fairly quickly. You are right that the low viral load is beneficial in this situation. Hopefully, you will get undetectable viral load and CD4 count higher than 350 in several months.

It is also expected that your fungal infection will improve when your CD4 count improves. As for the arthritis, this needs to be seen by your doctor, as the worsening of the situation may be a result of different reasons.

Finally, we will be happy to find a group for you, but we will need to know where you live, etc. so that we can find the best one for you. The best way to organise this will be if you give us a call: 0808 800 6013 Mon-Wed 12-4pm. All calls are free of charge from the landlines in the UK.
