Question

How do weight loss tablets interact with ARVs?

Hi there again.

I wonder if you could give me some advice on side-effects.

I have recently purchased ALLI slimming tablets as I am really struggling to lose weight. I swim 30-50 lengths 3 times a week and eat fairly healthy with the odd curry every now and then and drink only on a Saturday, which I consider normal.

I am 36 years old, 5ft 7 inches tall, weigh 12 stone and have a BMI of 26.1, so I

Answer

Thank you for your question.

I understand how frustrating it can feel to eat healthily and exercise without loosing weight. However, whilst Alli has been shown to be effective at small weight loss in conjunction with a balanced diet, it may not be right for everyone.

Alli is from the trade name for a drug called orlistat. It works by preventing the fats in your diet from being absorbed, and they are passed though you unabsorbed (hence side effects of wind (flatulence), diarrhoea and messy underwear.

    Hi Vuyiseka,

If you’re having issues with your weight you may need to talk to your doctor about this. Weight gain can be due to a lot of reasons.

    Hi Alina,
Maybe changing your diet can help reduce your big tummy? It’s a good idea to talk to your doctor about the ARVs you’re taking, and speak to a dietitian too. Eating a balanced diet and taking regular exercise can help to lose weight. There’s lots of info about a balanced diet in this guide to Side effects and quality of life.

Hi David, What ARVs are you taking? And what’s in Clenbuterol? You can try to find out about any drug interactions from this site: https://www.hiv-druginteractions.org

    Hi Patricia,
Have you talked to your doctor about weight gain? You can ask if there’s any treatment that might be okay with your ARVs. Some herbs and supplements interact with ARVs so it’s worth checking with the doctor first.

Putting on weight can also be because HIV is being controlled. That means your body needs to spend less energy fighting HIV and this could mean you gain weight.

Here’s a guide to a balanced diet from the guide to side effects and quality of life. Eating a balanced diet could help too.

Hi ,I have been on ARVs for 14 years now and am experiencing upper body fat, belly and on the back. I am a small person naturally and I am struggling to wear my size clothes due to the big tummy. I am considering taking apple cider vinegar and Optic Garcinia as I saw a research done on it. Would that not interact with my medication?
