Q and A

Question

Can i take my treatment in the morning?

Is it ok for me to take my treatment in the morning, instead of in the evening?

Answer

Hi,

This depends on what medication you are on. If you are taking efavirenz, or a pill containing this, it is not usually recommended. This is because of the kind of side effects efavirenz causes. Taking it at night means you are sleeping and avoiding some of the side effects.

If  you are on a combination that oddest contain efavirenz it should be ok to take int the morning. The important thing is that you continue to take your medication at the same time every day. You should not switch back and forth between the new time and the old time.  Good adherence is important to make sure your meds work.

You can find more information about adherence in our online treatment guide.

And more information about efavirenz in our medication guide.

    Hi Milani,

Emdolten is a safe and effective treatment for HIV. So there’s no need to doubt that the pills work. They work very well, and in a slightly different way to Atripla.

Emdolten is a single pill that contains tenofovir, lamivudine and dolutegravir. Please see this link for other names for this pill.

    Hello

I just wanna kindly ask something. I have been using Atroiza for four years. And now my doctor has changed me to Emdolten which you take in the morning.

Now my question is do they work the same way? I’m so skeptical, please help.

    Hi Ntsako,

It looks like they contain the same HIV drugs.

M171 is likely to be Tribuss.

These same meds are likely contained in a pill made by a different company. This link describes the pill as, Pink coloured, capsule shaped, with “CL 81” on one side and plain on the other side.

However, it’s a good idea to talk to your doctor about the names of your HIV meds. It’s difficult to tell what meds they are by what’s written on them.

Please check with your doctor even though they are likely to be the same meds.

    Hi Elizabeth,

Teevir is another name for Atripla. As it says on the link, take it before bedtime, on an empty stomach (or not with a high fat meal).

A high fat meal increases drug levels of efavirenz, one of the drugs in Teevir, by 60%. This increases the likelihood of side effects.

But, if you don’t feel any side effects at all, you can take it in the morning.

I’m using Teevir but use to drink it in the morning. Is it ok

    Hi Anonymous,

If you and your partner both have the same strain of HIV then reinfection is not a problem. Please see more at this Q&A.

Reinfection can be an issue if there is drug resistance. This is discussed in detail here:
    http://i-base.info/ttfa/section-2/7-reinfection-with-hiv/

Can I ask why your partner is not taking his medicine? Does he plan to start again soon?

Hi when you undetectable and you sleep with someone who is pos and is not taking his medicine does that mean you reinfecting yourself, what will happen to your viral load and CD4 count thanx

    Hi Athini,

As you’ll probably know, it’s advised to take Atrozia in the evening, this is due to possible side effects. However, people can and do take Atrozia in the morning. As long as you feel OK, there’s no reason why you can’t change.

Hi my name is Athini I’ve been on atroiza for about 4years now n am thinking of changing the time to the morning

    Will that be a problem?
