Q and A

Question

Can i take my treatment in the morning?

Is it ok for me to take my treatment in the morning, instead of in the evening?

Answer

Hi,

This depends on what medication you are on. If you are taking efavirenz, or a pill containing this, it is not usually recommended. This is because of the kind of side effects efavirenz causes. Taking it at night means you are sleeping and avoiding some of the side effects.

If  you are on a combination that oddest contain efavirenz it should be ok to take int the morning. The important thing is that you continue to take your medication at the same time every day. You should not switch back and forth between the new time and the old time.  Good adherence is important to make sure your meds work.

You can find more information about adherence in our online treatment guide.

Hi Tshifhiwa, yes it is okay to take Telatri at 12H00 everyday. There is no specific time that Telatri needs to be taken as long as it is the same time everyday.

Telatri is a geenric version of TLD. TLD contains dolutegravir. This drug can cause problems sleeping when taken later in the day. This is why it is recommended to take Telatri in the morning. However not everyone will experience this side effect and if taking it at 12H00 works for you, then that is the best time to take it.

Hi Milsa, Telatri and Reydin are the same medication. They should not be taken together as that would be considered a double dose of the treatment.

They are both generic versions of TLD. They look different and have different names because they have been made by different manufacturers. They sill contain the same drugs and will both work the same way. You should only be taking one.

Hi Ntombi, I am sorry to hear about your story but it is great that you are now doing so well on treatment.

Can I ask if something has changed recently that has caused you to feel more tired taking your treatment?

Unfortautnely taking a 6 month break is risky and can cause problems restarting treatment and possible resistance to your medication. Are you able to take all your medications together or do you take them throughout the day?

When stopping treatment, viral load can become detectable as soon as a week. At this point HIV can then start damaging your immune system and cause other problems.

Have you spoken to your doctor about how you are feeling and that you are tired of your treatment? Is there any other support they could offer that would be helpful? or have you considered joining a peer group that you are able to share your stories with?

Hi Jonah, how often are you late with your treatment? It is best to try and take your treatment within an hour of your normal time e.g., between 3:30pm and 4:30pm. This makes sure the treatment will still be effective.

It is fine to occasionally be late/miss a dose but this shouldn’t be a regular thing. Is there a reason that you have been late by 3/4 hours? Are you able to set an alarm on your phone to help you remember?
