Q and A

Question

What are the pills marked with M171 and D100?

Answer

If your doctor prescribed HIV medication that looks like the pill in the picture and has M171 embossed, this is likely to be Tribuss.

tribuss

Picture: Tribuss, manufactured by Aspen.

The picture is not very clear, but M171 is one one side and D100 is on the other.

This is based on the information at this website.

Tribuss is a generic version of Atripla and it is manufactured by Aspen. It is widely used in South Africa.

Just like Atripla, Tribuss contains three active HIV drugs – efavirenz, tenofovir-DF and emtricitabine.

Sometimes Tribuss is mainly used as an HIV treatment by people who are HIV positive. However, this is an older treatment that is steadily being switched to newer drugs in many countries.

Some countries use Tribuss as a way to prevent HIV after recent risk for people who are HIV negative. This way of using HIV meds is called PEP. Tribuss is not recommended as PEP in most countries though because of the risk of side effects that are higher in people who are HIV negative.

Hi Loui, how do you feel towards HIV? Disclosing someones status is very personal and it can cause a lot of anxiety. Your partner is taking medication, this means she is likely managing HIV well. Have you heard of U=U? It means that if her treatment is working well enough there is no risk to you. This is a link to help explain: https://i-base.info/u-equals-u/ Maybe your partner does not know how you feel, or would even respond to her status. It’s important not to take her not telling you as personal. In time she may tell you, but in the meantime maybe drop into conversation HIV and your thoughts. How did you find out she was taking these pills?

Hi Jezmen, these pills are used to manage an HIV infection. They work to keep your viral load undetectable and your CD4 count high. Have you been prescribed these pills by a doctor?

Hi Prince, there isn’t good data to say how effective PEP is, but taking it will reduce whatever risk you had. Teevir is a generic version of Atripla (https://i-base.info/guides/12423).

Although some countries still use this, it has never been used for PEP in the UK. This is because side effect of efavirenz make it difficult co tolerate (https://i-base.info/guides/734)

Hi Lucky, your partner does not need to tell you above their health as this is private for them. Please see questions 1, 5, 9 and 14 here:

    Hi Donald,

PEP needs to be taken within max 72 hours after a possible risk.
For info about PEP, please see here:
