Q and A

Question

What are the pills marked with M171 and D100?

Answer

If your doctor prescribed HIV medication that looks like the pill in the picture and has M171 embossed, this is likely to be Tribuss.

tribuss

Picture: Tribuss, manufactured by Aspen.

The picture is not very clear, but M171 is one one side and D100 is on the other.

This is based on the information at this website.

Tribuss is a generic version of Atripla and it is manufactured by Aspen. It is widely used in South Africa.

Just like Atripla, Tribuss contains three active HIV drugs – efavirenz, tenofovir-DF and emtricitabine.

Sometimes Tribuss is mainly used as an HIV treatment by people who are HIV positive. However, this is an older treatment that is steadily being switched to newer drugs in many countries.

Some countries use Tribuss as a way to prevent HIV after recent risk for people who are HIV negative. This way of using HIV meds is called PEP. Tribuss is not recommended as PEP in most countries though because of the risk of side effects that are higher in people who are HIV negative.

Hi Jerry, these symptoms do not mean PEP has failed. Are you able to access a 4th generation antigen/antibody test? After 1 month it will be 95% accurate. You will need to take a second test 2 weeks later (6 weeks after PEP), but this may provide some reassurance.

How long after your exposure after your exposure did you start TLD? TLD is a recommended drug combination to be used as PEP and so is effective at preventing seroconversion. Alcohol does not reduce the effectiveness of TLD as long as you remained taking it every day.

Have you spoken with a doctor about the symptoms you are experiencing?

HI Lucas, it is best you take this pill to the pharmacist for identification. You can also refer to this chart for information: https://i-base.info/guides/starting/arvs

hi is m103 a pep pill?

Hi Dexter, m171 is likely Tribuss if you have been prescribed this in the context of HIV. It is not a drug used as either PrEP or PEP. This is because it contains efavirenz which is often not well tolerated by people.

Are you taking this to prevent exposure, or have you already had an exposure and want a course of PEP?

PrEP – used to prevent, is usually a 2 drug combination. Usually it is called Truvada. PEP is usually given as TLD which is a 3 drug combination. TLD can also be used to treat HIV. Tribuss is only used to treat and not to prevent.

Hi Vero, please follow this link to a previous question to confirm that this medication is Trisbuss: https://i-base.info/qa/12098

If this is Tribuss (a brand version of Atripla), this is a suitable medication to be used as post-exposure prophylaxis. It will help reduce your risk of HIV transmission.

My doctor give me M171 after i had an uprotected sex. Do you think is going to help me???

Hi Dora, can I ask why you are afraid? As you have mentioned, your partner is taking his medication daily. This would likely mean that he is undetectable and cannot pass on HIV. Have you discussed this with him?
