Question

How can I decrease my viral load?

hi my question is that I found out I am hiv positive and my c4 was 64 and am now on treatment. The last time Ii do my varal load was more than 3000, they asked me to do it again this month. I’m stressed to much and that makes me scared. What can I used to boost my viral load? I don’t have a problem with my treatment my problem is the stress I have.

Answer

Thanks for getting in touch.

What was your viral load when you were diagnosed? How long have you been on treatment? Has your CD4 increased since you started meds?

I appreciate that you are concerned that your viral load is not undetectable. It is though still low, and will continue to go down if you take your meds. It can take up to six months to become undetectable. It is taking your meds that will decrease your viral load, and nothing else.

Hello Dinah and thank you for the question.

Congratulations for being pregnant. You must be very excited.

Please don’t worry. You are doing everything you need to do to protect your baby.

107 is a very low viral load. This means your medication is working well.

You might get a better result with your treatment if you don’t take it at the same time as vitamins and you take it with food.

Please avoid any herbal supplements (as they are not tested in pregnancy) and only use what your doctor have asked you to take.

If there are any problems in the future your doctor will advise you on the next steps.

Please feel free to write to us again if you feel we can help.

Keep up the good work and congratulations again

Hi Unathi, your viral load and CD4 count are both excellent. Your HIV treatment is doing exactly what it needs to.

Any viral load below 200 is considered undetectable meaning you cannot pass on HIV and it is not impacting your health.

A CD4 count between 430 and 1690 is normal. At 500 it means your immune system is equal to someone HIV negative.

You are already doing everything right, you do not need to be worried.

Hi Nomusa, what is your viral load? and what has your viral load been for the last few tests you have had?

Are you still taking your medication everyday? Have you ever missed doses? and when you had your recent viral load tests were you ill/had a vaccine recently?
