Q and A

Question

I tested positive and my husband tested negative.

Please, I’m a married woman, I have lived with my husband for 8 years. I tested positive yesterday he tested negative. I’m confused, please help me out. Is it possible?

Answer

Hi, how are you?

Have either of you ever had an HIV test before? It is possible for some people to have HIV for years prior to finding out their status. In this case it is possible you contracted HIV before marriage.

It is not uncommon for one partner to test positive and the other negative. There are a number of factors that may affect this risk. A guide explaining a difference in a couples HIV status can be found here.

Will you be starting treatment now? Finding out your status will help you manage HIV and prevent passing it on to your husband. Treatment and barriers (e.g., condoms) can reduce this risk to 0.

Josh.
