Q and A

Question

Can TLD be used as PEP?

Can TLD help someone who has been in contact with an HIV positive person to prevent them from contracting HIV before 72 hrs?

Answer

Hi, how are you?

Yes you can. TLD is a combination that can be used as PEP and for the management of active HIV infection. PEP stands for post exposure prophylaxis. PEP is used to prevent established infection after exposure.

TLD is a first choice recommendation for PEP. The course lasts 28 days following a high risk exposure. It is only used in cases where the exposure was within 72 hours. After this, regardless of what drug is prescribed, PEP will not work.

However, if your partner was using effective HIV treatment (ART) , you will not be at risk. Having an undetectable viral load on ART means HIV is not a risk. Please see:

If you have any more questions please ask,

Josh.

Hi 3D5ON, after 72 hours the effectiveness of PEP is not evident. Unfortunately after 72 hours PEP is not likely to have an effect. However if you feel more comfortable taking a course of PEP there is no harm in continuing to do so. Do you know if the person with HIV was on treatment or if they had an undetectable viral load?

Hi Solo, it is best to take this medication to a pharmacist to be identified. It is not possible to identify it from the engraved code.

Hi Linkie, yes you are safe. Even if your partner was not being truthful (why do you think this?), being on PrEP will prevent any risk of transmission.

Hi Nkosinathi, TLD would work as PrEP however it contains more drugs than licensed PrEP drugs. This is why is not recommended. TLD and PrEP medications do use the same class medications as each other. However because TLD is not licensed as PrEP, there can not be a full guarantee that it will work.

Can I Used TLD as a form of Prep? This is because it would be easier for to get TLD than It would be if I was to get the most recommended prep drugs

Hi Mary, starting PEP so soon means transmission is not likely. Do you also know if this person was on ART/undetectable? If so the risk of transmission is further reduced.
