Q and A

Question

I’ve stopped taking ARVs during pregnancy.

I’m seven months pregnant and I just stopped taking treatment. Does that mean my baby is at risk of being positive?

Answer

Hi, how are you doing?

Congratulations on your pregnancy. There is an increased risk to your child being positive if you stop taking medication. Can I ask why you have chosen to stop?

ARVs are the best was to keep you viral load down. This is the best way to prevent transmission to your baby. There are no adverse risks to your baby when taking ARVs.

While you are off your medication, this increases risk to your baby. This will mean when you have your baby, they are likely to be offered a longer course of their own ARVs when born. This is done to help reduce the risk of your baby becoming HIV positive.

If you have any other questions please get in touch. Good luck with the rest of you pregnancy.

Josh.
