Q and A

Question

Can I be reinfected while I am taking Biktarvy?

When taking Biktarvy can you still catch HIV again?? If you have unprotected sex with someone who is positive?

Answer

Hi, how are you doing?

If you are consistent with taking Biktarvy, not only will it help manage your own HIV but it can also act as PrEP – preventing transmission from other people.

If this other person was on their own medication there would be no risk of transmission due to U=U.

Josh.

Hi Deliner, yes you are correct. While on Biktarvy it will suppress your own HIV.

Taking Biktarvy regularly will also mean you are protected from fruther exposures, even if your partner is not on treamtnet.

This is called Treatment as Prevention (TaP): https://i-base.info/guides/starting/treatment-as-prevention-tasp

    Hi Josh. Please elaborate further.

If I am religiously consistent with my Biktarvy treatment and I am down to undetectable since years and in a good state of health otherwise (cd4 levels in normal range), if I have unprotected receptive anal sex with a person who, for argument’s sake, is a hiv1 positive, will my Biktarvy treatment protect me from new infection?
