Q and A

Question

When can I test after PEP?

I have used Trenvir as PEP. After 7 days of exposure and now at 30 days I tested negative for HIV has worked?

Answer

Hi, how are you doing?

While on PEP, HIV tests are not accurate.

A 4th generation test is the most common test used to confirm HIV status. These tests are accurate from 6 weeks after finishing PEP – 10 weeks from initial exposure.

It is a good sign that you have been testing negative, but to confirm you still need to wait.

Hi I want to know my chances

I had sex with a sex worker and I used a condom but I had a slight cut not bleeding at the edge of my penis where the condom didn’t cover the cut 16 hours before sex I worry that her virginal fluid might have rubbed on the surface which I doubt did that cur area didn’t penetrate but how will I know so I started pep 22 hours after and was given only Truvada also the girl went to test for HIV with a 3rd generation antibody test which came out negative on July 14th a day after we had sex the girl also showed me negative test she did in April and June I also been using Truvada daily every day at the same time and never missed a dose which I used for 30 days and finished 15th August I know I’m to wait 6 weeks before testing but I’m going crazy still and it’s affecting my work and productivity I need medical advice to stay calm or worry before the 6 weeks

Was I at risk at all?

I exposed on 4th august(evening) and i start taking viraday on 5th august (after dinner) about 28 hours later. Some doctor suggest that i should do test after 10 days when Viraday is finished (30 days). Total 40 days. I’m planning on a test on 14th september. But when can i be sure that i’m HIV free and what are my chances (if any)?

Hi Sam, oral sex carries little to no risk of transmission (even with a bruise/scratch).

For more information about testing and transmission please see here: https://i-base.info/qa/factsheets/hiv-transmission-and-testing

    Hi Josh,

I received an oral sexual activity from a sex worker without protection and the top of my penis was bruised/scratched. 24 hours later, I was put on PEP. I have tested for Ag/Ab via Cmia 2months and 10days after exposure, which tested negative. Then I retested for just AB after 2 days via CMIA, may I know the outlook of my situation.

    With regards,
    Sam
