Q and A

Question

When can I test after PEP?

I have used Trenvir as PEP. After 7 days of exposure and now at 30 days I tested negative for HIV has worked?

Answer

Hi, how are you doing?

While on PEP, HIV tests are not accurate.

A 4th generation test is the most common test used to confirm HIV status. These tests are accurate from 6 weeks after finishing PEP – 10 weeks from initial exposure.

It is a good sign that you have been testing negative, but to confirm you still need to wait.

Josh.

Hi Saf, please see the link in the previous comment. I-base does not have further information about testing and transmission to what has already been listed.

Hi josh , yes she did , I’m still testing negative m, we have tested again but this time 3rd generation and it’s negative . That’s 5 weeks after Pep and 6 weeks after pep . I also received oral sex from her. What are the risk of receiving oral sex and are my tests conclusive ( 4th Gen 19 days after pep, 3rd Gen 5 weeks after pep )

Hi Saf, did your partner consent to have these tests done?

As all results have been negative for both parties the risk of HIV is minimal to non-existent. Symptoms of HIV do not present while on PEP – HIV is not the cause of your current symptoms.

Hi josh .. I had a risky exposure last month. Condom broke with someone of unknown status , I tested her twice, one after sex and another after a month both 3rd generation and she was negative. Despite the test I took pep 56 hours after initial exposure and finished on 31st jan. Two week after pep I have been having symptoms like white tongue , sore throat, cough and chills . The symptoms have subsided but I’m worried sick that i can’t eat . I tested 19 days after Pep (Vidas duo test p24 and antibody ) I’m assuming that’s 4th Gen but the result came out after four hours , blood was drawn from my vein and it’s negative . What do you think please ?

Hi Sonnia, no there is no risk to your partner. As you are on PEP there is either no presence of HIV OR PEP will suppress to the point that it is impossible to pass on HIV.

Hi Abubakar, what is the type of test you have used? A 4th generation test will be conclusive from 6 weeks after the last dose of PEP meaning your results would be conclusive.

If you used a 3rd generation test that only looks for antibodies (is not a combo test) the result will only confirm your status 12 weeks after the last dose of PEP.

Hi Curtus, as you had a course of PEP this would delay when your test can be conclusive. At 8 weeks after PEP it is very likely that you are HIV negative, however to confirm your result you will need to test again at 12 weeks after PEP if you are using an antibody only test.

If you can access a 4th generation antigen/antibody (combo) test, this test will now give you a conclusive result and you would not need to wait any longer.
