Q and A

Question

When can I test after PEP?

I have used Trenvir as PEP. After 7 days of exposure and now at 30 days I tested negative for HIV has worked?

Answer

Hi, how are you doing?

While on PEP, HIV tests are not accurate.

A 4th generation test is the most common test used to confirm HIV status. These tests are accurate from 6 weeks after finishing PEP – 10 weeks from initial exposure.

It is a good sign that you have been testing negative, but to confirm you still need to wait.

Josh.

Hi Yodin, 6 weeks with a 4th generation test after PEP is conclusive. You do not have HIV and you do not need to worry.

I started pep 64 hours exposure. Sir i have negative test but have been shown all symptoms of hiv like soaking night sweats, fever, oral thrush, diarrohoea in the pep period which occured from 3rd day before i started pep. But the tests after 102 post exposure which is 4th gen test comes back non reactive. Us cdc guideline states that 4 months post exposure is conclusive after pep.Do i need other test or should i move on. I am so much worried and feeling guilty the mistakes that i have done.

Hi, I had a exposure to hiv and started pep 65 hours after exposure then tested with 4th gen test after 7 days post pep and 35 days post exposure. I again tested with combo test 28 days post pep and 58 days post exposure. Today after 72 days post pep completion and 102 days post exposure i tested negative using 4th gen test. Should i consider my test conclusive? I have shown all symptoms of hiv about 1 week after exposure.

Hello! Sorry I know this isn’t the place to ask this but I just wanted to inquire about if I’m at risk when I have recently given a blowjob for like 5-6 minutes. he didn’t ejaculate in my mouth, he also said he has been tested last month and is negative. I didn’t brush my teeth before nor did I think I have any cuts. Does this warrant getting tested or am I okay? Thank you in advance

Hi Rocky, your tests show you are negative but please see this link to learn more about HIV, PEP and testing:

I am sorry that feeling guilty spoilt your experience. People in this industry are generally very experienced and can give you the chance to learn about sex and your body, and to have an enjoyable time.

Hi I had an condom burst event while I was having sex with a female sex worker in last October2021.

My PEP was finished on 20Nov2021. I started my tests every month. I have taken Elisa & Viral Load every month, it has been coming negative. Last was done in July2022. Now I have gone for Western Bolt too.

Do you think I may still have any chance of having HIV infection. I regret my decision to be with a sex worker, but I am concerned about my status and my family life is completely ruined for now. Please guide.

Hi Timoth, a PCR test is not routinely used to confirm HIV status. Please follow this link for more information about testing: https://i-base.info/qa/257

When using PEP, the first day of exposure is considered the day after you finish the course of PEP.

When to test for hiv using PCR test after finishing PEP?
