Q and A

Question

When can I test after PEP?

I have used Trenvir as PEP. After 7 days of exposure and now at 30 days I tested negative for HIV has worked?

Answer

Hi, how are you doing?

While on PEP, HIV tests are not accurate.

A 4th generation test is the most common test used to confirm HIV status. These tests are accurate from 6 weeks after finishing PEP – 10 weeks from initial exposure.

It is a good sign that you have been testing negative, but to confirm you still need to wait.

Josh.

6 weeks, 8.2 weeks and 12 weeks form the last dose of pep 3rd generation test all are negative.(blood taken from vein). Now is this conclusive or still need to wait for conclusive report til 6 months. Can I assume that I am absolutely negative or not?

Hi Vee, no this is not a symptoms of HIV. Your test at 120 days is conclusive. You do not have HIV. You need to speak with your doctor about other potential causes for this rash.

Hi Vee again, got exposed on the 23rd of Dec 22 started pep TLD 5 hours later and finished 21st Jan 23. I’ve been testing hiv negative using antibody test 120 days after pep negative. But my worry now is the rash on my arms that keeps coming and going. Red, raised bumps and itchy…and painful joints. Could this be long term side effects or hiv? Am confused and now frustrated please assist. Thanks

Hi Sumit, 3rd generation tests are only reliable 12 weeks after PEP.

  10. Sumit

Is 3rd generation antibodies only test is reliable after 12 weeks post exposure or post pep. I took pep and 12.2 weeks from exposure test is negative. Is there any chances to change the status of test. Many people said there are only some little cases where 12.2 weeks negative test turn positive even in pep taken case. Plz reply
